Where Breast Cancer Might Come Back and How to Detect It

When breast cancer comes back, it may return in the same place. This is called a “recurrence,” because it is not a new cancer. But a recurrence can also appear in a place not directly related to the first breast cancer. This is called a “metastasis”, and if cancer is detected in several areas, these are called “metastases”. Biopsy to Confirm Recurrence

If your symptoms or test results seem to indicate that the breast cancer has come back or spread, your doctor may suggest a biopsy of the suspected cancerous tissue. You may need a biopsy to:

  • rule out other non-cancer causes of the problem,
  • make a definite diagnosis of recurrent or metastatic breast cancer, and
  • figure out the current “personality” of the cancer (including hormone receptor status and HER2 status) so your doctors will know how best to treat it.

But now that reimbursement is more of an issue, with many generic products on the market featuring comparable effects, the industry has changed its focus toward more specialized care, like oncology.

Can Changing Your Lifestyle Help Treat Prostate Cancer?

Up to 73% of men with prostate cancer take nonprescription supplements, and smaller numbers use diet, exercise, or both in the hope of improving their outcome. Most of these men also receive conventional therapy, but a few depend on lifestyle alone. The appeal of lifestyle therapy is obvious but does it work? Experts don’t know, though research raises hope that it may have a beneficial impact, reports the July 2007 issue of Harvard Men’s Health Watch.
